Start with what you drive. Sparco's karting knee and elbow pads are elasticated, and the Sparco FIA versions are made from fireproof materials for wear under a race suit.

Why do F1 drivers wear knee pads?
A single-seater cockpit is narrow, and the driver's knees sit close to the chassis and the steering column. Pads soften that contact over a race distance and in an impact.
Are Sparco knee pads certified?
Yes. Both the karting and the FIA versions are EN 1621 certified, the European standard for impact protectors, and use polyurethane pads that absorb impacts.
