HARNESSES

( number of products: 101 )

This section covers racing harnesses in 3-, 4- and 6-point versions, with ECE-approved belts for road cars and FIA-homologated belts for competition use. You'll find OMP harnesses with both types of approval, Sparco harnesses that include Martini Racing designs, and 2-inch Sabelt harnesses with bolt-on or snap hook fittings. Shoulder pads, eyebolts, harness plates, seatbelt cutters and safety hammers are also here.

Choosing a racing harness

Start with the number of mounting points. OMP, Sparco and Sabelt all offer ECE-approved 3-point and 4-point harnesses, and OMP also has 4-point harnesses with FIA homologation. The 6-point harnesses come from OMP and Sparco and are FIA-homologated.

The homologation tells you where a harness can be used. ECE approval applies to road vehicles, while competitions run under FIA rules require FIA-homologated harnesses. FIA harnesses also have a limited validity period shown on the label, so check what your series regulations allow.

Some OMP 6-point harnesses come in pull-down or pull-up versions, which describes how the lap belt is tightened: with pull-down adjusters you pull the strap ends downwards, with pull-up adjusters you pull them up towards the centre of the body. OMP also makes FHR versions, designed for use with a frontal head restraint such as HANS. Sabelt's 2-inch harnesses come with bolt-on ends, snap hooks or a combination of the two, so check how the mounting points in your car are prepared. Sparco adds Martini-themed 3-point and 6-point harnesses to the mix.

Pads, mounting hardware and safety tools

Shoulder pads slide over the straps. The harness pads section includes 2-inch and 3-inch Sparco pads, Sparco mini and Martini Racing pads, and pads from OMP and Sabelt. For mounting the belts there are eyebolts from OMP and Sparco, along with weld-in eye bolt plates and harness plates. For emergencies you'll find OMP seatbelt cutters and Sparco safety hammers, also available with a seatbelt cutter and light.

A harness has to work with the seat it is fitted to, so it makes sense to look at the seats as well. The wider car equipment section also covers steering wheels and, for cars that need onboard fire protection, fire extinguishing systems.

What kind of harness does a Formula 1 car use?

F1 drivers are held in by a 6-point harness designed to work with a frontal head restraint. The closest equivalents in this category are the FIA-homologated 6-point harnesses from OMP and Sparco.

Is a 3-point harness suitable for racing?

Generally not for competitions run under FIA rules. The 3-point harnesses marked ECE are road-car belts, so for FIA events look at the FIA-homologated harnesses: the OMP 4-point models or the 6-point harnesses.
