Building a set of racing underwear
A full set usually starts with long johns and a roll-neck top, with a balaclava and socks covering the head and feet. All three brands make long johns and roll-neck tops, while Sparco and OMP also offer T-shirts, boxer shorts and underwear shorts if you prefer shorter cuts.
FIA homologation
Most long johns and roll-neck tops here are FIA homologated, as are many of the balaclavas and socks. Many championships require homologated underwear under the race suit, so check your series regulations before you buy.
Women's and kids' underwear
FIA-homologated women's underwear comes from OMP, including briefs, bras and Nomex underwear, and from Sparco, which makes women's shorts. For younger drivers, OMP offers kids' balaclavas.
Balaclavas and socks
Balaclavas include summer styles, open-face designs and FIA-homologated models, and OMP also sells them in a multi-piece set. Socks come in short and long versions. Sparco adds socks with Martini Racing, Gulf and Lancia designs, along with a Martini Racing roll-neck top.
Summer and winter options
Alpinestars makes long johns in summer and winter versions, and OMP offers winter long johns and roll-neck tops for colder days at the track.
Completing your kit
Underwear is only the base layer, so pair it with one of our race suits and finish the outfit with race gloves and race boots. For head protection, see helmets and helmet accessories, and for extra safety browse protective gear. Pit crews should head to the section with gear for mechanics, and every category of driver kit sits under driver gear.
Top Racing Shop ships worldwide and has 20 years of experience in motorsport. Everything we sell is original, officially licensed merchandise.
What do F1 drivers wear under their race suits?
Formula 1 drivers wear fire-resistant underwear beneath the suit, typically long johns, a long-sleeved top, a balaclava and socks, all homologated to FIA standards. The FIA-homologated garments in this category give drivers in other championships and at club level the same kind of protective layer.
How does a roll-neck racing undershirt differ from a T-shirt?
A roll-neck top has long sleeves and a high collar that sits under the collar of the race suit and covers the neck, while a T-shirt has short sleeves and leaves the neck and arms uncovered. Homologation details for each top are listed on its product page.
